Title: How to get your songs from Playstation to the PC
Post by: DJ_Omnimaga on February 19, 2008, 08:44:41 PM
If you use a Playstation version of Music 2000 or any other Music program here is how you can get your tunes to your PC. First you need to take the A/V cable you use to connect the playstation to the TV, but instead of connecting the Audio cables (red and white) to your TV connect them to the PC instead (I believe it's in the Microphone port). To do this you need one of those adapters:

or
(http://www.mtv-music-generator.com/tutorials/mini-to-2-RCA.jpg)

You may also need some extensions if your playstation is very far from your PC.

As an alternate method you can use a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm cable and plug it in the TV headphone port and PC mic port, but then you get mono sound and you can hear the TV buzz/hiss when the song play.

Once it's done you will need a recording software such as Audacity found at http://audacity.sourceforge.net (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) . You will need to set the software to Microphone
(http://www.mtv-music-generator.com/tutorials/how_to_get_your_songs_to_the_pc.gif)
Then record and save either as wav, mp3 or ogg. I recommend the mp3 format though, as it is small and almost everyone can play them.

What about us who use a slightly different cabling to the "dual A/V" cable? My PSX uses just the one plug and socket. (though it has an adapter so the analogue aerial can be plugged in as well)

Also, will the 3.5mm-3.5mm cable actually cause mono sound? Wouldn't it depend if the TV was mono itself? (Also, there is an option in Audacity to record in Stereo, but it has a slight delay of ~0.1 second.)

Movie maker comes with Windows XP. It should be in Start->Programs or Start->Programs->Accessories . UNless it only comes with SP2, but most people who have XP have SP2 installed nowadays

ouch sorry to hear :( I hope you can get it fixed soon.

Btw what antivirus do you use? If you use Norton I highly recommend against it. It's more problem than anything else and it's so commercial. I recommend Avast, which is free, combined with Ad Aware SE Personal and Spybot Search and Destroy (also free).

AVG is nice too if you don't like Avast but Idk if it's free

Even WMM is the only video editting software I have, it's not that good. Case in point; I had to restart it 5 times to create 1 video. Thank goodness for AutoRecovery (it might do it on the Vista version as well)...

Yeah WMM is annoying sometimes. I only use it cuz it is simple and it let me decide of the filesize I want without losing too much quality

Ahhhh this is my kinda site. I have been creating bass music since 1999 with the MTV Music Generator on my Ps1. I still create to this day. My music is strictly bass for car audios subwoofer systems. If you like extended bass frequencies from 10-150hz then you will enjoy my music. I have been trying to figure out how to record my music onto my PC for quite awhile. I really appreciate you giving this info. Look for many songs from me soon, and possibly a CD or 2.

Another way get your music from playstation to pc without losing any sound quality is this:

If you own a DVD recorder...connect the scart socket from the playstation to the DVD recorder. Record your tunes to a DVD, then rip your tunes off the DVD with your PC using any appropriate music ripping program. I've used this method very succesfully and the quality of the sound is excellent.

What if your computer doesn't have a/v inputs, and your tv doesn't have a headphone output? I'm kinda computer illiterate.

I had recorded my songs from the PS2 to my stereo using the A/V cables, and then from my stereo to the computer using a cord from the headphone jack to the computer. But then my stereo got messed up in the move, and I no longer have a stereo with a/v hookups.

I am unsure about this one, but maybe at some stores there are cables that goes from antenna plug (assuming you have that) to a headphone plug. I am unsure though, but I know there were A/V to 3.5mm adapters so we never know.. Else it may be quite problematic

I've had problems, too, with being able to get full stereo from any source (PS2 and cassette) onto the PC through the sound card connections.
I have a set-top DVD recorder and, if I ever get around to getting another Playstation2, I had already planned on using the method that KalsolarUK suggested to get my songs onto the PC.  Plus, for those who want to upload to YouTube, you could just use the video, as is (re-encoded for the web, of course).

Oh snap.

Do you put this in the mic input on your computer, and the put the a/v cable from the ps2 in those inputs in this adapter? If so, then I feel really stupid right now.

I had been putting them from my PS2 to my stereo onto cassette, and then transferring from tape to PC. Durr.

oh wait I was stupid x.x, when I suggested antenna to 3.5 mm converter I forgot the antenna part was for the TV not the PS1 XD. If you still have your old PS1 A/V cable just take this one, connect it to this Y adapter and plug the 3.5mm part into your mic port

Radio Shack (or any similar store) would carry a large selection of these types of adapters.
You might even be able to find them in stores like Wal-Mart.
Expect to pay anywhere in the $3 to $5 range for one.
You may also want to look on eBay - you might get a better price, there.  Type "audio cable adapter" into the search box and several different types come up, including one's like this which are priced at $1.99 + $2.25 S/H.

Radio Shack went out of business in Quebec city and the surrounding cities. They all changed banner to Circuit City. Still pretty much the same though, except price dropped slightly. Such cables are still between $10 and $40 where I live though, depending of the brand and quality, so if I would need one I would probably need to rely on Ebay and hope to find a dealer who ship to Canada and doesn't charge too much for shipping.

When I got Music 2002 Club Edition: Slinky (that upgraded version of Music 2000/MTVMG PC) the game was $1.95 euro, but shipping was the double x.x

yeah that was a huge problem for me wehn I got Music 3000 (altough I moved to MTVMG2 right afterward). On PS1 emulator I used Music 2000 directly on the PC but now I can't do this with MTVMG2/3000 because my PC cannot run PS2 emulators. Unsticking the audio cables from the video one left me more freedom though and I just had to move the PC on the other side of the desktop under it

unfortunately due to them not being legal to distribute and my host not allowing me to distribute warez either I cannot distribute them and have to delete any link leading to them here, but you can actually use the original CD as well if you use an emulator. If you use an emulator (most likely ePSXe with Eternal SPU plugin all found on google.com since they are the only thing that can run Music 2000) you can record sound using audacity following instructions  at the beginnign of this topic (or other help topics), but If you use a playstation you will need the cables. I am unsure where they can be found outside North America though. In North America they can be found at Radio Shack or Circuit City. Else for both you can check ebay, sometimes they might have some

This is like heaven^^ I connected and record my songs since years in exactly this way...it took quite some time till i got the clue how to connect all things etc...and yea use audacity, it's freeware and a very good tool, even the record quality can be adjusted to quite a nice level  :)

Sry that I didn't explain something, I just had to tell that I record the exactly same way xD

is audacity a multi track recorder?
ive made a few songs on a demo of an older acid. i recorded the track from generator then recorded dialouge from a movie and had to go back and cut it up.

so im wondering if i could do that with audacity, since the demos are only like 30 days and thats too much rushing on creativity.

Got a problem. I can't upload music via the little plug into the jack at the moment because the tune becomes WAY too bassey no matter what settings I use, microphone/recording has no bass boost and it worked fine before but it's too bassey when I try it now. I attatched a small segment to show you what I mean. Any tips here? Won't be able to import my other M3K stuff if I can't solve this.

Yeah, I have exactly the same problem as jcw when i  try to record sounds from playstation to pc using audacity, but it works fine when i record from vinyl through my mixer. So now i record my psx tunes on to dvd then extract to .wav.But it would be good to use audacity,Because i usually use one dvd per tune which is a waste really.

My way is really different, think I posted b4 but my pc box plays through stereo speakers,(2 sound wires in stereo RED/WHITE and 1 wire YELLOW in TV.)  AUX out plug,(STEREO.) in headphones jack to pc. Record in AUDACITY. Output volume 1.0 input volume 0.2 play at about 1/2 VOL on stereo until it sounds ok. RECORD.

But i don't think my mp3's r perfect speak to Darkbliss or Bass launch

I had the same problem with the bass-y noise, I finally worked it out the all the leads and everything was fine, so after fiddeling through stuff I worked out that turning down the volume in the game clears up the distortion. Hope this helps.

I think there are some programs where you can modify the speaker panning, but if it was recorded mono I'm not sure about that (you used the 3.5mm lead method?)

You should be able to if your using a stereo jack,Ive used a mono jack by accident before.I think you can usually tell by how many little plastic rings are on the jack plug itself,2 for stereo & 1 for mono I think. But i haven,t worked out how to record in stereo using audacity. And i get ringing whenever there is subbass :-[

I sometimes use 'Reaper' This is a seriously loaded multi track sequencer rivaling top end software but is free. Once youve got your head around it, its nice to use even if you just record into it. Add some eq and compression, export to .wav and you have your mastered track in minutes.
The problem with the 'mic' input on a pc/laptop is that its designed to be just that. A mono mic input!
Get urself a usb audio interface. A dongle size one is as cheap as chips(ebay has hundreds of them)and depending on the type, can let u record in stereo either through a mini jack or phonos.

The first one is not good. This will prob only have mono mic input and generaly used for skype etc..
The easy cap is V good and iv heared good things. Its designed for av(video) too.

Check:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Behringer-UCA202-U-Control-USB-Audio-Interface-NEW_W0QQitemZ160307314722QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Consumer_Professional_RL?hash=item160307314722&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1298%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
A bit more pricy but plug and play is simple. It comes with software to capture audio but audicity can recognise it as an input.(il confirm later)
Title: Re: How to get your songs from Playstation to the PC
Post by: stonecold on January 03, 2009, 03:29:21 PM
Confirmed... Audicity can recognise any input or soundcard (which is what a usb interface is). Go to 'Edit' - 'prefrences'  - 'audio in.out' - 'device' . Select the device in the 'recording' drop down box and your new usb card should be there.ie.. '****usb interface' or 'easycap' etc..Select it and away you go.

Not sure if this is mentioned but I got the best possible sound quality:

-Run M2000/MTVMG on a PS2.
-Connect a optic fiber cable in 'digital out' on the PS2.
-Other end of cable connect to portable DCC recorder in 'optical in'.
-Connect second optical cable in DCC 'optical out'.
-Other end of cable to 'optical in' in Audigy break-out box sound card.
-'Record pause' on DCC.
-You have a digital signal of M2000 songs on your pc. No loss of analog distortion.

Have tried to connect PS2 directly to sound card via optical but I heard sound but could not record (DRM?).

What I have to do is lower the song volume on the game itself. When I record from MG2, I have the volume set to 5.

I always turn the Microphone level in Audacity down to 0 when recording from the TV.
For recording into a microphone (vocals, voice-acting, etc.), I have it at around 0.4.
And for recording straight from the speakers, 0.
