Downtempo / Re: Million (Christmas Contest entry)
December 21, 2009, 03:09:34 PM
Sorry it's a bit of a late reply!

I'm really happy you enjoyed it, Blonde Justice, especially considering your entry was one of MY personal favorites, too. XD The sample you're thinking of is Driftwell. It was cut down, then duplicated and reversed for the second bar of the 2-bar loop to produce the effect, if i remember clearly. And, yep, the bass does have some pitch bending in it. Both versions of the bassline do. And, yeah, there are two versions of the bass; they're the same pattern but feature different samples. The second one is only really used in the chorus sections. XD And thanks for the comments on the snares and the tomes. I do like me some punchy/meaty snares.
Thank you!

I can't say i'm to suprised i didn't take home the gold or the silver, but it was definetly a lot of fun, entering this contest. (In spite of all of the technical issues that damn song bought me. XD) Well done to the winners, and all of the participants, and because i'm in a bit of a rush to get back to posting the backlogged music i've got, i thank every one of you that took the time to not only listen to, but give me feedback on Million. It really does mean a lot, and i'm glad you enjoyed it!

Downtempo / Million (Christmas Contest entry)
December 17, 2009, 09:28:52 AM
I did post this in the main thread, but i felt like kicing off a thread for this in case someone missed it.

Rather then going for the typical christmas Shlock, i went for something that sounded wintery to me. I also wanted to experiment with vocal samples, so i picked one that, in context, acctually fits the 'Christmas theme' quite well, if you think of stars as a symbol of hope. The overall result is something that almost sounds like a Fatboy slim song, which wasn'ty acctually intended, but is a nice bonus. I also included a falsified 'Sampled 'n Chopped' piano riff, 'cus i have a facination with chopped loops.
I'd say more, but i'm at school at the moment, and need to be somewhere shortly, so i'm in a rush. ^^;

Enjoy!

I've not said anything beyond a quick mention of it in one post in the main contest thread, but your entry is one of my favorites on the album, mate. It's increadibly catchy, it's simplicity is that of the charming sort. Nice one, mate!

Best of luck to all the remaining entrants! I took a listen to everything here, and i am THOROUGHLY Impressed. So much so i made a quick 2-CD set for whenever i may need it. XD Favorites of mine include Fear 2 Stop's entry (The intro cracks me up; but in the good way. I love the beat, too!), The Lyricist's Entry (Because i love me some trippy music), Omni's Entry (Oh, if i was a stereotypical-to-the-point-of-ludicrocy Pill=Poppin' Raver, Omni... If only...), casper audioghost's Entry (It's got a nice, simple charm to it), and Master Dutch's Entry (It reminds me a LOT of the work of an artist that goes by the name of Pogo. Or Faggottron on Youtube).

And whilst i'm at it; I'm in love with the Welsh version of that song you did for your old Primary school, Tim. I think it's the voice of the kid singing the Solo sections that sells it, for me. I'm a friggin' softy when it comes to kids. XD

Oh yes, and by the by, it was a tough job (And i had to suffer M2K crashing! Darn you memory restrictions!), but i finishedmy entry. I changed a few of the samples around, added in some falsified "chopped Piano" notes that are supposed to sound sort of samples (but are, in fact, not. Of course), because i've got a disturbing facination with "Chopped" loops. I did the same to the vocal loop towards the end, just to add a bit of flavour. I was going for something that was a mix between something Fatboy Slim or the Chemical Brothers would make, with a little flavour of Hideki Naganuma mixed in. (AKA, the man behind some of the Jet Set Radio/Jet Set Radio Future and some of the first Sonic Rush soundtrack). Keep your ears out, too; i'm working on a remix of it. Purely because i can.

As a heads up; i've only got tomorow and Friday to worry about (or possibly less, if the Snow keeps up), then i'm off for two weeks. If i get the time (and i probebly will), i'll happily do an 'Album Cover' for this contest over the weekend. I need an exscuse to stretch my drawing fingers anyway.

All that aside, i hope you enjoy this; I went through QUITE  a bit of trouble to finish it on time. XD

I'm still behind with my song, and i've got but an afternoon to finish it. D8 Drat!
On the plus side, the fact it's freezing frickin' cold around here at the moment is a nice little peice of inspiration. Hopefully i'll have the whole thing finished by tonight.

And darnit i WILL go through this thread at some stage and listen to all of the entries. I'm half tempted to make a quick mix-disc of the stuff for a little get together with some pal's i'm having this friday, acctually.

Unfortunetly, the original charity idea had to be pushed back until after new year; i'm not gonna be able to sort everything out 'til after christmas, nor will i get the stuff i need probebly before next week. It's a pity, 'cus the charity in question is one dealing about something kinda personal (It's a charity set up to help a couple of Romanian children born with Squints. I was born with a Squint myself; which eventually led to my Lazy Eye), but, hey, that's just the way thing's work. Pity, really...

It's a damned fine idea, even if the point raised by Blonde Justice is a fair one. But to be honest, i doubt that would be the case. If there are people in this forum that still enjoy listening to one another's music (and i know for a fact there are), then it should take off and hopefully increase the activity around here, and, maybe, even the drive to post more music.

I do need to say though; I hardly comment these days purely because i am busy a lot of the time, with 6th form coursework, or, alternativly, working on music for a couple of games being developed (Don't get too excited; it's fangames and homebrew stuff), which eats up a lot of my time. Plus, given just how much i've missed in the number of times i've been inactive, i've got a lot of catching up to do. I just need to donate a day or two to doing it. Thankfully, this week is my last week before the winter break, so i'll have a little time to do so come next week.

I'll make sure to go through the entries and check 'em all out, as well as showing Tim with a ungodly ammount of praise for being one of the factors that kept me in the music making game right after i'm done posting this.

I was struggling with an idea of what to do for the contest. I didn't want to do something sing-songy-christmas cheese that i'm sure that a lot of other entrants are going to be doing, and i didn't want to redo a christmas carol in (one of) my style(s). About an hour earlier, possibly less, i came up with a little idea as something to do for christmas; Write a peice of music, stick it on a number of CD's, sell them at school, and donate every last penny of it all to a charity of some kind. So, i get to work on a peice i'm calling "Million", and i notice about halfway through "hang on a minute, this sounds kinda winter-ish."; so i figured i'd submit it to the contest, too!

HOWEVER, I must stress, this is ONLY a demo so far. I plan for it to be a bit longer. But, hey, i figured i'd allow you to have a sneak peek at what i've got so far!

And holy sweet lord do i want the WipEout pure soundtrack. Like, you have no idea.

Video Game/Film Soundtracks / Better, Stronger [UNUSED]

And now, onto the "Chaos: A Love Story" soundtrack. Chaos is a game being developed by a friend of mine for his game design class. He asked if i could do the soundtrack for him. And, well, how could i say no?

This was going to be the final battle song for Floyd. But it doesn't really work... It's a Melodic D'nB/Techno track that takes a little too long to build up for a platformer boss fight. It's probebly better for an RPG, or something. Instead, i'm allowing my friend to 'borrow' the final battle track used for Beyond Human.

Enjoy!

I... have no idea. AGAIN. This is a platforming game, yet i create a boss song that sounds like a boss track from a early-to-mid-90s SHUMP. XD Eh. It works. The title, by the way, refers to the fact that the type of boss you fight with this song playing too are colour-co-ordinated robots of some kind. I know, i know, terrible. I have a facination with horrible puns, damnit. XD
It's one of the first times i tried out in-song tempo changes. I think it came out quite well.

Enjoy!

I don't THINK i've uploaded this one before... But if i have, i apologise. It's a song i WAS going to use for something of my own, but it better suited Chaos, so i donated it to the project. It's a mix of Techno and Orchestral music where, i won't lie, the main focus is the beat, rather then the melody.

Enjoy!

Floyd, for the record, is the games main villain.

I... honestly don't know. XD Stage 4 is supposed to be Floyd's base after it's grounded. For some reason i made an ultra cheesy, early-dance-music sounding peice to go along with it. But i do like it.

If the title confounds and confuses you, then i'll explain. Mirelle is the games main character. She is female. The level this song is for is a mountain, and whilst i think by this point they've seperated, there's a side character that is Mirelle's bodygaurd. And, is of course, male. Just think about it for a minute.

I was going to add some rockin' guitars to this, but i couldn't find anything that worked. So i just went with different organ samples to acompany the rock-styled drums and the repeated pan flute motif. It came out really well, i reckon.

Enjoy!

The tutorial level of the game takes place in the middle of a Tundra. And seeing as it's apparently very quick and simple, i figured i'd shoot for a simple song. I'm quite proud of this, if only for the unusual rhythm when the drums kick in and the percussion stops. And the use of a metallic hit in place of a hi-hat or an open hat.

I should also warn you; this is one of the projects where my song titles become either massivly 'punny', a play on words, or... Just weird. XD It's something of a 'theme' of mine.

Enjoy!

I figured i'd upload the rest of the Beyond Human OST. Or, what i have of it, so far. Then i'll upload a soundtrack i've been working on for a friend. So that should tantalize your tastebuds before i rifle through everything ELSE i need to upload here. XD

Or, rather; the Stage Complete Theme, the Continue Screen theme, the High Score/Name Entry theme, and the Game Over theme. It seemed utterly pointless to upload them all into seperate threads.

No, i couldn't resist the title of the Stage Complete theme. Yes, Tony is the name of the main character. No, i couldn't resist using Orchestra Hit. No, i couldn't resist adding the deliciously cheesy laugh to Beyond the Grave. Yes, i'm aware Legend is spelt wrong in Legend's filename.

If you're confused by the name 'Death By...', then i'll explain it; When you lose all of your lives, but still have continues remaining, then i plan for there to be a number of continue screens- each one selected at random- which Depict Tony in a number of deathtraps. Tied to a chair whilst the room fills up with water, tied to the floor whilst the cieling lowers, tied to a table whilst a buzzsaw lowers (because if Ninja Gaiden can do it, so can i!), etc. etc. The screen fades to red after the countdown ends, which is JUST as the trap is about to do the poor little guy in. Because i am a heartless bastard and it's the best way to keep the players playing. XD

BONUS: You lucky people get to hear a song that was acctually done by a friend of mine (that is a killer piano player and damn good at using fruity loops; i was the guy that introduced her to M2K) that, sadly, didn't have a home; i decided to 'adopt' it and put it into Beyond Human. She was pleased with that. But, i must stress, i had NO INVOLVEMENT in this songs creation AT ALL.

Enjoy!

I guess you could call this the games 'Main Theme Song', seeing as it does pop up in a number of places. The first file is, of course, the Introduction Sequence version of the song, the second is the simpler Title Screen version. I guess i was aiming for something that pulled people in with the promise of action, adventure, possibly a bit of mystery. And something that wasn't exactly HAPPY, but nor was it sad.

Enjoy!

The 'full' version of A Vicious Battle, this is set to play with the last confrontation between the robed figure and the game's Hero... after the robed figures identity has been revealed. Now, obviously, i can't explain that plot thread without not only spoiling the game, but acctually spoiling a very large chunk of the games story (cliche'd as it is; hey, it's a love letter to 90s platflomers, what did you expect? XD); but i do acknowlage the song's title sort of gives it away.

Since i'm sure the file probebly won't fit within the memory limitations, i uploaded it to newgrounds; you can download it there.

BONUS: You do get an EARLY DEMO of this song that was made quite a while back; before i got ahold of the audio jack and was still recording with a microphone.

Throughout the game, you will encounter a robed figure either at the end of the first 'Zone' of an Area, before the main boss of the Area, or as the acctual boss of the area itself. He has a lot of moves similar to the main characters, and is equally as fast and strong to boot. So i whipped up this quick little theme with which you fight him too. Albiet it's acctually an arrangement of the song used for the final confronation with said robed figure...

Enjoy!

Another song very similar to Sweeping Shadows. As in, it's a simple song that's put to a fairly quick section of a level and doesn't vary itself an awful lot, and is planned to have a far more varied remix made of it. This time, though, rather then a cave, this level takes place in the Seaside Town before it. The first section of which is acctually on said Seaside Town's famous beachfront. Famous for the ruins of the previous bay that was there, and many untraceable ones... That look suspiciously modern to be 'ancient ruins'. It's supposed to be the first sign that things maybe aren't all as well as they seemed. (Well, in spite of the fact that freakin' Robots are attacking in what the characters believe is 1992, but, hey.)

I can remember this song was acctually inspired by another in some respects... But i've forgotten which. If i do remember, i'll post a link to it.

Enjoy!

One of earlier levels in the game is set inside a cave. The second half of which is a brightly illuminated mining operation that's continuing ti take place- even though there's nobody else in sight. Besides the enemies, of course.
The first half of the cave however, is a typical dark, gloomy, damp, cold, and creature infested hellhole. Thankfully, it isn't a brilliantly long level. Or, at least, it's not planned that way. So, i didn't want to do much with this song. It's really just a simple-ish loop made with a simple-ish beat (that almost sounds sampled at some points), with a dark, yet smooth pad, there is some bass here and there (as well as a stringe arrangement of the bass), and ambient effects, including animal noises. (One of the times those animal samples do come in use for me). These features constantly fade in and out inbetween different sections.

The second variation of this song, when i get around to doing it, should be more exciting. Never the less, Enjoy!
