I'm not sure if the types of polls I've seen, on other forums, would work the same, here, but I imagine that a simple poll could easily be posted on the song download thread, itself.

It could look like this:
QuoteRate This Song
() 5
() 4
() 3
() 2
() 1
On the other forums, the poll is set up to only allow each member a single vote and you can't see the votes until you cast your own (which would address the issue of being influenced by how other people have voted).

Of course, it would be up to the artist whether or not (and which tunes) he wants to do this with.  Plus, a separate thread could be started, elsewhere, where the artist can enter the song(s) with the highest ratings into a "Best Of Genre" type of poll/contest (like the SOTM and SOTY ideas that have been bouncing around).

This way, it would be up to the individual and not require the staff to get too involved.

...just a thought...

Lost songs (MUSIC/MTVMG) / Re: Two "warm up" songs
February 22, 2009, 08:00:30 PM
Good, sound, on both of them, especially Blood, which, as it is, now, would make for a good tv show theme - something new and hip, like Dollhouse.

I've used that Prayer riff, before, on a couple of tunes, but I've never really liked it.  With what the Generator has to offer, as far as good guitar sounds go, sometimes that's the closest thing to the sound you hear, in your head, and you just got to try and make it work.  The "chunk" part sounds good.  If you're anything like me, though, that part will end up being the first half of a riff in the chorus of another song, entirely.

When you get a chance, post up some of the older stuff, from a few years ago.

Thanks, StoneCold, but, to be honest, it's been years since I've done anything with the Generator.  I don't think I can even remember how I may have done the songs I've done, other than whatever info I may have posted in the thread, itself.  I do believe that I used "Monster" for my kick drum, most of the time.  Beyond that...??

Welcome to TIMGUL, Gorex.

Sorry, Casper, I didn't mean to offend you.  It wasn't anything personal against those who watch the shows, it was more of an attack on the people who decide which shows stay and which ones get canned.  The studio execs constantly disappoint millions of people with every decent show they take off the air, too soon, then wonder why no one trusts them enough to actually watch whatever new show they put on.  (Which, of course, leads to even more premature cancellations).

147:  Yeah, Gary Oldman is great, too.  He's one of those guys that can morph into just about any type of character.  "Leon: The Professional" is one of my favorites, too.  Also, if you get the chance to watch Firefly, you won't be disappointed - "Serenity" will make a lot more sense.

JCW:  Babylon 5 is one of those shows that you'd have to watch every episode to really get into it.  Being serialized, like 24, if you miss one week, you'll be Lost, the next week.  JMS set out to make a five-year story arc and stuck with it, the entire run.  Sure, there were minor self-contained story-lines but, for the most part, what you've got is a single 120+ hour movie that's divided into 116 parts.  It deals with war and diplomacy; cultural differences that lead to bias and, eventually, hatred; life-long relationships forged out of necessity.  There's also quite a bit of religion involved, as well.  The first time you get to see the true form of a Vorlon, it puts the overall, million-year struggle into a new perspective.

As for sports, I've never been much of a fan, except for things like the X-Games and Pro Wrestling (if you consider that to be a sport - which most people don't).  I did get into watching NFL, just this past season.  Actually, I just got into watching the Ravens.  Something told me that this was going to be an interesting year, for them, with the new head-coach, and all.  This lead me to record all of their games, this year, and I'm glad I did.  The collection would have been so much greater if they'd have made it to the Super Bowl, but I'm not complaining.  The fact that they made it as far as the AFC Championship game was, in itself, a minor miracle.  There's always next year. GO WACCO FOR FLACCO!!

I'm about at the end of a very similar "bad flu type thing" that started about Wednesday, so I know how you feel.

I was with you up until Seinfeld, Friends and Raymond.

Whenever I'm trying to make a point about how tv shows that are actually worth watching tend to get canceled while utter crap shows seem to go on forever, Seinfeld, Friends and Raymond are the first three examples of utter crap shows I list.  To me, pure hell-on-Earth would be to be trapped in a room and forced to watch Seinfeld, Friends and Raymond - seriously, a blowtorch to the groin would be infinitely less of a brutal, inhumane torture. The boys at Guantanamo are doing it wrong, with the "waterboarding" and taking nude photos (WTF! is that all about, anyway? -- Nevermind, I don't wanna know).  What they need to do is get a room with big-screen tv's on each wall and the DVD box sets of Seinfeld, Friends and Raymond.  By the end of the second season of either series, those "terrorists" would be willing to give up their own grandmothers. [/rant]

Ahem... anyway...

As for stuff I do like, well, a couple of my favorite actors are Kevin Spacey and Edward Norton.  For older movies, you cant beat a Cary Grant film.  I like shows and movies that are of a sci-fi/fantasy nature, with my all-time favorite series being Babylon 5.  One example of the above-mentioned "shows that are actually worth watching (that) tend to get canceled" is Firefly.  Hopefully, Joss Whedon's latest venture will be allowed to last longer than one season.

I've tried, many times, to get into Anime but, whenever I try to watch one, all I can hear is "Go, Speed Racer!  Go, Speed Racer!  Go, Speed Racer, Goo-oo-oo!".

'Oi Moight ahswell tawk laht this and fings you 'no wot I meen?'

That sounds like Brad Pitt's character in "Snatch".

Actually, it sounds like just about every character in Guy Ritchie's movies.

As for being a grammar-nazi, I learned, early on, that that sort of thing is annoying - even for the person doing it.  If you try to correct every little mistake you read, you'll never have any time left to actually say anything new.

EDIT:  WooHoo!!  100th post!

I agree that simply having someone - anyone - listen to something of mine and actually enjoy it gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling, all over.  Being paid for it would only put icing on an already sweet cake.

I don't mind the idea of just putting it out there for people to use, as they wish - as long as they credit me for it.  You wanna make a megamix and you think you can work a part of one of my tunes into it? Go for it! - just list me as the author in your song list and let me know about it so I can grab a copy.  You wanna use one of my tracks as a them song for your podcast?  Great! - mention my name, every once in a while, and let me know where to find it.

Of course, I don't really expect anything like that to happen - I'm just saying...

Wow - $100!!!

I remember being in Wal-Mart, some years ago, and seeing dozens of copies sitting on the $10 shelf.

If only I'd have known......

I didn't even own a computer, at the time, so it didn't cross my mind to even pick up one copy.

I did, eventually, get a copy "the other way", but it crashed my crappy, old system.  I'll have to wait until I can get a computer that was manufactured in this millennium before I can try using it, again.

Welcome to TIMGUL, ecmb.

Being your own worst critic is, most of the time, a good thing.  It's the best way to get better at whatever it is you're trying to accomplish.  While your friends and family may pat you on the head, saying, "Gee, that was really swell, little guy", you can't do that to yourself.  You'll get the most brutally honest opinions about your creations from within.

As for selling my music - - some years ago, I was heading in that general direction.  Now, I'm content with just letting people hear it.

We're all waiting, with bated breath, to hear some of yours.

Get a free account at someplace like http://photobucket.com/ and upload your avatar there.
It will give you links to use at places like this.
Use the Direct Link for your avatar and, if you want to post a picture that you want to show up in a forum comment or as a signature (like mine), use the IMG Code Link (basically, the same link but with "[ img ]" and "[ /img ]" at either end (without the spaces).

For example, here's a direct link: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b15/zapphnath/StinkNPoopsmall.jpg

and here's an IMG Code link:

That's my dog and cat, by the way.

I was wondering how those of you who upload to YouTube do it.

By that, I mean, do you do anything to prepare your videos, before-hand, so that YouTube doesn't have to convert them, thereby giving you more control over the final quality, or do you simply upload whatever format your video is already in?

If you do prepare them, yourself, how do you do it (I.E., what program(s) do you use and what settings do you find to work the best)?

I've attempted to upload my first video, but it's taking forever for YouTube to convert and post it.  I'd converted it to MP4, as per the instructions I found while Googling the subject, but, apparently, that wasn't good enough.

Shed some light, if you can, please.

Lost songs (MUSIC/MTVMG) / Re: Jungle Party

Welcome to TIMGUL, Beoulve, take a look around and make yourself at home.

Those are some pretty cool drum beats you have going on, at the beginning and in various spots, throughout.  It does remind me of some old-school video games - I can just imagine the spikey-haired kid jumping on his motorbike, with his giant sword strapped to his back, off to face some monstrous beast.

Good stuff.  Post more.

Duuuuude!!!  That sh!t rawk'd!!!

I'm not familiar with Lacuna Coil so all I can say is that it sounded good - whether or not it sounded 'right', I'll have to take your word for it.
"Belong" is hard as nails, man.  Good double-bass and nice use of the Generator's crappy guitar samples.  (I always just used the included samples, myself, too.  I think I tried ripping a sample from a CD, once, but it didn't work out the way I wanted it to).

Your work reminds me, a lot, of my own.  Heavy and hard with a little bit of experimentation thrown in.  Extra kudos for being able to get the PC version to work for you - a lot of people have complained about it.

Introductions / Re: Ladies And Gentlemen, Introducing
October 05, 2008, 01:01:52 PM
Okay, cool, I didn't know you could just replace the attachment.  I figured that post would be stuck with that attachment.

All in all, I recorded a grand total of over 40 tracks, from 5 memory cards, that equal about 3.5 hours.  Not all of it is post-worthy and a few of the last tracks are different versions of previously recorded ones, like "Memory" with the guitar parts muted so that I can, sometime in the future, record myself playing the guitar parts, for real, to add to it.
I was unable to find my Generator 2 memory cards, though.  For now, I'll just have to live with the crappy versions I already have of those.

Introductions / Re: Ladies And Gentlemen, Introducing
October 05, 2008, 12:05:51 AM
There's been a little update to my situation and I thought that my Introductions thread would be a good place to put it.

Every so often, just for the hell of it, I try turning on my PS2 to see if - maybe, just maybe - it might work.  Well, today it did, after several years since the last time I used it, on a regular basis.
So, I hooked it up to my DVD recorder and started recording.  I'm on my second memory card, now, as I type this.  I tried Generator 2, first, but it kept getting hung up on the Loading screen - plus, I can't seem to remember where the memory cards are, so it doesn't matter, anyway.
MtvMG 1 hasn't worked correctly in several years, in this machine.  Imagine my surprise, then, when it did.  Right now, I'm just going from one song to the next, loading it in and letting it play through.  Even the short, crappy ones.  I can sort them out, later.
The best part is that, now, I'll have crisp, clean copies of my songs.  In full stereo, too!  Plus, I'll have video that I could put onto YouTube.
Hopefully, the game won't glitch out before I'm able to get them all.
