Yeah, I believe it works better if you install it from a disc, but you can just mount the image, afterwards, to run it.

This may help:  In your song, if you can, move everything to the right by a few bars and add another track, at the beginning, that is just a couple of "countdown" beeps.  Pick a simple sample and just put it at the first and third position for two bars. (beep...beep...beep...beep)
When you go to record the individual tracks, you'll mute all but the "countdown" and the track you're recording.  Each track will, then, have the "countdown" at the beginning and in the same spot.  Even tracks that actually start much later, in the song, will have the "countdown", at the beginning.
Later, when you go to line everything up, all you need to worry about is lining up the "countdown" - everything else should fall right into place.
Once you have everything the way you want it, you can just cut the "countdown" part out.

Well, that's my suggestion, anyway...

When you say the sound is not so good, is it distorted?  Does it sound like you're trying to listen to it while eating a bowl of Corn Flakes?
If so, then the problem is in the settings.  I learned (too late) that having the Gain (input volume level) set too high, when recording, can introduce a lot of unwanted distortion.  You can find this setting, in Audacity, right beneath the Play and Record buttons - it's a slider with a little microphone icon.  I've found that anything above 0.2 will make the music distorted.  You can always use Normalize or Amplify to make it louder, afterwards, but getting rid of that distortion is almost impossible, after the fact.
Record one of your songs, again, with the Gain level set lower and see if that helps.  If not, come back and ask, again - I'm sure someone else will have other tips that might help.

VLC - the Video Lan Client - is a great little app for playing video files.  It's freely available and you can get a version that runs directly from the executable - it doesn't even install anything - and it comes with most of the codecs you'll ever need, built in.  It'll play almost anything you throw at it.

It does have some decent audio EQ settings, but it also has some video filters (color saturation, contrast, etc.) that can make poor videos look better.

There's a free version of Jet Audio Basic that has good built-in audio EQ settings that sound pretty good.  Also, it seems to cache the files, instead of just playing them directly from the hard drive, which results in almost no skipping.  I can load in a 2-hour podcast and it'll play all the way through where most other players I've tried tend to skip, after a while.

MUSIC series discussion / Re: THIS MAKES ME SOO ANGRY

I, honestly, can't say I know anything about the song he used - I've never heard it before.
For anyone who has ever used the Generator, it's easy to see that the music doesn't even come close to matching the video. The screen is filled with riffs during the quietest parts of the song and that amount of vocals could only be added externally, after the fact.

Seems strange, though, that someone would try to fake being good at something that most people have such little respect for.

Let me be the first to say, Dude, you can't ask that, here.

Those of us who've been members, for a while, like this forum and would like to continue to be able to use it.  Openly discussing such things, however, may bring about the wrath of Jester (seriously, one of the guys who created the Generator is a member, here, and he certainly wouldn't appreciate us openly talking about how to take money out of his pocket).  In short, that could get us closed down.

In Audacity, go to EDIT > PREFERENCES and look under the QUALITY tab - it's the first option.

Okay, sure, I'll join in, too.

My name's David and I'm about to hit the big "four-oh".
I eek out a meager existence doing photo restoration/repair and editing work out of my home.

I'm a movie and tv buff and I like sci-fi/fantasy the best.  My favorite shows include Stargate SG1, Buffy/Angel, Firefly, and Rescue Me, but I do like a good sitcom, as well, such as My Name Is Earl and The Big Bang Theory (those geeks are funny as hell).

Back in the good ol' days, I used to dig on some rap/hip-hop stuff but my main musical interests lie in rock and heavy metal.  My favorite bands include System Of A Down, Rammstein, Faith No More, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Disturbed, Hed(PE), etc., etc., etc..  I, also, tend to get bitten by the nostalgia bug, every once in a while, and will listen to some 70's music or Dean Martin or Tom Jones stuff.  And I was a big-time Prince fan up until a little after Parade came out.  I do like a couple of his songs that came out after that but I haven't really even listened to most of it - especially after he started preaching.

And I just LOVE the internet.  I get most of my news from DiGG and FARK and see most movies and tv shows through (sources that shall remain un-named, for obvious reasons).

I didn't really care too much for videogames, when I was younger.  In my late twenties, though, I got a used SNES with a couple of games and played DOOM and Phantasy Star II until my fingers bled.  After the SNES died on me, I got a PlayStation, along with the first Resident Evil and Tomb Raider games.  Tomb Raider was the greatest thing I'd ever seen (up to that point).  I remember the "butterflies in the stomach" feeling that I would get whenever she fell from a great height - it felt like I, myself, was falling.  It was so cool.  Eventually, I moved on to the PS2.  The GTA games were my favorites, as well as the Tony Hawk series, but I do love a good RPG, as well, with the Final Fantasy series being my favorites, in that category.  Since my PS2 died and I can't afford to replace it and my crappy computer can barely handle emulating SNES and Sega systems (and chokes on PlayStation emulators) I really haven't been playing a lot of games, recently.  On the PC side, I've always liked the "god games", i.e., Age Of Empires and The Sims.

Well, I guess that's more about me than anyone really needs to know. :D

Although you're not likely to find anything with the ease-of-use and usability of the Generator, there are plenty of audio sequencing applications out there.  I know because I've spent a lot of time looking for something, myself.

Besides the above-mentioned Fruity Loops, here are a couple of other pay-to-play apps:
--Cakewalk Sonar - http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/HomeStudio/default.asp - like FL, it's a bit on the difficult side but has many capabilities.
--Tracktion 3 - http://www.mackie.com/products/tracktion3/ - more simplistic than most $200 apps, which makes it easier to use, but also fully featured.

On the Freeware side, you'll find apps with less features than their expensive counterparts, though they still may not be as easy to use as (nor as pretty looking as) the Generator.
--Anvil - http://www.anvilstudio.com/ - with MIDI samples, it's nearly unlimited, but you can only work with a single, one-minute long, imported sample.  There's a $19 optional plug-in that will allow you to work with up to 8, sixty-minute long imported samples, though.
--MODplug - http://pweb.jps.net/~olivierl/ - ugly as hell but lots of features (for a free app).
--OpenSebJ - http://www.evolvingsoftware.com/ -  again, ugly as hell, but some parts of it work in a (fairly) similar fashion to the Generator.

Well, those are all I know of, offhand.  If I find any more, I'll update this list.

But I love the fact that when you go to MUSIC created and click started column, I appear 1st and it goes down alphabetically.

Yeah, and, if you click it again, my name comes up first. :)

Dang, Bliss, you beat me to it.  I was gonna suggest that the Music That You Created board be broken down into sub-boards, but not for different genres.
Instead, I thought it would be cool to break it down into what type of post it was.  I.E.:
1-songs that are directly downloaded from here
2-songs that are linked to elsewhere and
3-YouTube links

While I'm making suggestions, I think it would also be cool to have an option, after clicking on a member's name, to list only the topics he/she made in the Music That You Created board.  Now, you can click a name and, on the page that comes up, you can click to see all of that person's posts, but to quickly get to a list of all of that person's songs would be nice.

Other interests / Re: Who has Myspace?

That's why it's usually a good idea to have a second hard drive or partition your main hard drive.
A (relatively) small partition, 20GB is sufficient, which is used for Windows (or whatever OS you use) and the programs that you've installed, plus a second partition for all of your other files - pictures, movies, songs, text files, etc..  This way, if you do have to do a clean re-install (which the "experts" suggest you do at least once a year) none of your important files are affected.
I tend to keep the installers of any programs I get on a separate drive (my system has three) so that I will still have them to re-install, should the need arise.  I hate having to try to find those great little programs that I absolutely need but can't seem to remember the names of (like that one that does this thing...oh, or the one that does that - can't live without that... now, what was that called, again?)
Of course, backing up to disc is very helpful, as well.

Ha!!  I imagine none of my stuff would ever make it onto a TIMGUL mix, considering the style of music I'm into.  That's cool, though.  You guys keep dancing - I'll stand over here and bang my head by myself.  :)

I had dreams of making it in the music biz, myself, when I was younger.  Of course, the time for that has long since passed me by.  When I was at the right age to get into it (the 80's), I didn't fit the physical profile of the people who were being signed - I wasn't a 90 pound anorexic kid with big hair and didn't wear make-up.  Who wants to see some fat guy singing on stage?  I mean, sure, you've got Meatloaf and that guy from Blues Traveler and... and... um... I guess that's about it.  Nirvana changed the way people look at rock musicians, sure, but they came along a little too late for me.
Creating music with the Generator was always more of an outlet for my creativity than a way to become famous, or anything.  I wouldn't trade my experiences with it for the world.

Hi, Jack.  ( Never say that on an airplane :) )
Welcome to TIMGUL.

Radio Shack (or any similar store) would carry a large selection of these types of adapters.
You might even be able to find them in stores like Wal-Mart.
Expect to pay anywhere in the $3 to $5 range for one.
You may also want to look on eBay - you might get a better price, there.  Type "audio cable adapter" into the search box and several different types come up, including one's like this which are priced at $1.99 + $2.25 S/H.

One thing I was really hoping for - and severely disappointed by the absence of - was to be able to import Generator 1 songs into Generator 2.  Or, at least, I never figured out how to do it.  I tried to recreate some of my songs in G2, but it was always a hit-or-miss proposition.

Welcome, Billy.  Glad you found the site - the more the merrier, eh?
I've noticed that most of the other sites dealing with the Generator have died out, which is strange, considering how "popular" this site seems to be.
