Title: Holiday Competition Featuring Cold Storage (Submissions go here)
Post by: .:DJ Droppin:. on November 30, 2009, 03:54:30 AM

Here's my entry "Christmas Canon(Medley)" .... I used the melody from the classical masterpiece Pachelbel's Canon. Added my own twist with sleigh bells and what not. I tried to incorporate many different styles too.

Post by: Fear 2 Stop® on November 30, 2009, 11:31:36 AM
This is the place to submit your tracks for the TIMGUL Holiday competition hosted by our guru, Cold Storage.

QuotePRIZES
The music 3000 sampler prize was the first thing I thought of, as I know they are tough to find
and I just happened to have a spare one here. Don't worry, I will also be digging out some other
prizes too, just to make the whole thing worthwhile for people who aren't using or don't own
MUSIC 3000. I'll post again soon to let you know what the full prize list is! Smiley

CLOSING DATE
Closing date at this point is flexible(ish)... on the one hand I want to make sure people have enough
time, but I also want to get the prizes to people before the end of the year. So I guess around 16/17th
December is cutting it fine enough maybe?

ELIGIBILTY
If you've not got access to (any) MUSIC products to create a track then in fairness we'll have to
say sorry to you for this compeititon at least. In the spirit of the comp. we should stick to music
created using the products. That means MUSIC, MUSIC 2000, MTV MUSIC GENERATOR, MTVMG2,
MUSIC 3000, Pocket MUSIC GBC/GBA and MUSIC 2002 Club Edition.

POSTING ENTIRES
Where are we going to post the entries? Possibly a good idea to start a new topic for entries?
I'll leave that up to the admins. I'm busy working on the Competition Anthem just now... as soon
as it's finished I'll post it to the forum. Wink

BTW, just to be a bit more all encompassing and P.C. we should really call this the Holiday Season
music compeition... don't wanna exclude anyone who doesn't do Christmas per se. Wink

Good luck!

So, place your submissions here...

My submission... "Slay Ride". Was once posted here, but this is a slight remix (and has cleaner sound!)

I *almost* submitted "God Rest ye Merry Psychopaths", but this is a much more fully realized production. It helps if you visualize Santa trippin' balls and picking off feral cats from his sleigh (hence, the title).

DJ Droppin...Very, very good. Yeah, great use of the pad sounds..I personally struggle with them myself, so I gotta give you props!

I think I may have mucked up the merging of the topics lol

Hello again!  ;D

To give members and the public easy access to competition entries I've created a BandCamp page;

http://timgulxmas2009.bandcamp.com

If ANYONE who enters objects to their entry being posted there, let me know ASAP and I will remove it.
This BandCamp page links to the TIMGUL site, so hopefully it will drive traffic here too... :)

I've set this BandCamp page up just for the competition... as people submit their tracks, I will upload them
to the page - unless you don't want me to (please state when you post your entry to this thread).

If you want me to post any extra info. or art in your track details, post it with your submission in this topic.

Hope this helps?

ATB,
Tim.

Ah nice. I checked out the page and it looks fantastic, Tim. I am honored to have my song on this.

I appreciate those who've already listened and commented on my track. I'm glad you liked it.

Just so everyone's happy with the terms of the competition, best to get rid of any problems at the start!  ;)

Here's a PDF of some (legal sounding) T's & C's that should ensure everyone knows what's going on and no-one
gets upset/offended/cheesed off. I know it seems a bit overkill to do this kind of thing, but I've seen less formal
things go pear shaped because the rules were all a bit "wishy washy".

http://www.coldstorage.org.uk/TIMGUL-COMP-XMAS-2009.pdf

If any of the admins need changes to the rules I can update and re-post.

Looking forward to hearing more!!!  :D

Listening....
Nice synth intro..... Plays along perfect with Jingle Bells.
Then it gets dark.... One of your trademarks.

Liking the reverb snare.
Trippy.
Has a nice beat and sound to it.... This (to me anyhow) is a bit untypical of a production for you, but meaning this in a good way.
2:15 liking that percussion and bell chorus. Nice touch!
3:30 I like the sliding bells sound changing in pitch.
Really like the overall panning bass kind of has a reverb/distorted sound.

Excellent song. Great entry indeed.

Edit: We submit our songs here. Is it okay we comment on the songs in here? or...

"Edit: We submit our songs here. Is it okay we comment on the songs in here? or..."

Yeah, I was thinking that when the first batch of comments came in, I thought
"Oh no, how will we know where all the songs are?"

But, now I've set up the BandCamp page I'll be trawling this thread every now and
again and copying songs to http://timgulxmas2009.bandcamp.com for completeness.

So, from my perspective I don't mind... keeps it fun & fresh.

'course, I'm a bit of an interloper here, so it's not up to me, LOL! ;)

You're not really an interloper...you're the reason all of this is possible! Man, let me just say I *greatly* appreciate all that you've done.

Droppin...glad you liked the track! Yeah, we kinda went for a more commercial sound for that one... may make a video for this...probably would be keen to use clips from Silent Night Deadly Night lol.

Sort of an update on the track I've got prepped:
It is a cover/remix of a metal song and it doesn't really sound Christmassy. :-/
I've just got the vocals to record (and fix the sound levels on some of the riffs since they'd be too loud) - though I'm experimenting with the two microphones I've got and I'm going to try and record through my camera and my headset mic simultaneously; once I've got those recorded, I can go about editting the files together. It's just finding the time (since I don't like to record vocals when other people are in the house)

Also, whilst the song had to be split into two seperate files on the emulator's Memory Card (like the original), the first half takes up 1 block of Memory Card. The other? Four :D. (which is actually a record for me - mine are usually 1-2 blocks in size.. three if I'm lucky)

Got a tune I'm working on, it's not a really long song, and I didn't want to make too much of a cheesy Christmas kind of rip off with slay bells and all that but hopefully it's the kind of thing you're looking for. What worries me is that maybe some forum members (not any in particular I'm just generalising here) may think that if someone beats say an experienced TIMGUL member to the prize that maybe they are more talented or that somehow there is a certain level of talent needed to win this. Being a kind of newbie to the series myself (if I am even that anymore), this kind of thing does worry me slightly that we would be overlooked in said contest. Not stirring or whining or starting shit or anything, just trying to make what is hopefully a valid point.

good point lyricist     however i think that since the contest is being judged by cold storage anyone who enters will be judged without favoritism because cold storage is not really aware of who's a vet and who isn't-he designed the software and isn't a timgul regular per se altho he has been a member awhile he just reappeared so i'm certain his judgement will be independent of that sort of vet  vs newbie thinking                                     casper
ps-i was going to try to wrote an entry since i moved my pc to a spare deroom of my girlfriend's house on friday but somehow i lost the adapter to connect my playstation to my pc in the move :( i don't have money or transportation to buy one as i used my money to pay someone to move me however i do have a spare ps cord i could rig with a headphone cord manually if i really wanted to but at the moment i'm busy building my net label and perfecting my techniques on jeskola buzz tracker/vsti host

The tracks need to be composed using; MUSIC, MUSIC 2000, MTV Music Generator, MTV Music Generator 2, MUSIC 3000, Pocket Music (GBC/GBA) or MUSIC 2002 Club Edition. MUSIC 2000 was released on PC, and MUSIC 2002 Club Edition is only on PC.

Hope that clears it up?

AFAIK, Caspers tune was "...made in one hour on mtv music generator(north america)".
Title: Re: Holiday Competition Featuring Cold Storage (Submissions go here)
Post by: CoLD SToRAGE on December 06, 2009, 07:08:15 PM
"MTV Music Generator (North America)" is basically "MUSIC 2000 (UK)" so it's done on a PS1 (edit: could of course be a PS2 running a PS1 game, or if you have the right PS3... well you get the gist!) whereas MTVMG2 is of course PS2.

I had a listen, and it sounds pretty authentic to me, but I've not used the products in a little while(!)  ;D

There's def. some TV out noise at the start of the file, and I don't think there are any external sounds used?

I'm sure Casper can clear it up for us, but I think it's a kosher entry.  :D

i will remove my entry as i used other programs to add samples. i have the pc version of music 2000 and the cd sampler has never worked so ive been using audioticity and virtual dj to add outside samples.
my own fault i should have the rules first sorry for any inconvenience.
will remove right away.

Hi Guys,

I've added the latest tracks: http://timgulxmas2009.bandcamp.com

Keep up the good work!  ;D

My track is coming along... sorry for the delay, but I'll upload it to
bandcamp once it's done. It's probably going to be nearer the more
typical and "twee" Christmas end of things, but it's been fun using
a controller to write music again(!)

Regarding Spacekid's entry... no worries. Good of you to be 100%
honest.  ;)

the hihat...i guess it's a combo of cheap close, sizzly open and an open hat, like nine alpha or nine choral. as for the bass, i guess he used smooth.. the bass at 1.30 it's hard to recognize since there are various samples with a similar sound. maybe it's jubass5, but i'm not sure at all about that. the bell is fm bell. the key at 1.02 is soft key c4 at 22khz or c5 at 44khz. the clap should be dry clap. the kick is probably a 909kick. the pad is the one and only breath bell. the ending key is not easy to recognise, it might be vari hit 1.

LOL at "scared virgo"!  ;D

I don`t want to get involved in all the politics, I just want to comment on Rob`s, quite frankly, AMAZING track.

The intro is one of the best I`ve heard, then the beat kicks in at 1.27, just awsome.

Mate I`m amazed at the overall production of this track, the dreamy melodies, the beautiful string work, it just drips with absolute class.

What`s this at 3.46? Are we taking a turn to the darker side of Christmas? Fuckin awsome!

Rob this is without a doubt one of the best tracks I`ve ever heard on TIMGUL, you are definitely one of my favourite artists here without a shadow of a doubt, just truly amazing stuff.

Thanks, Bliss I appreciate your comments and feedback. Yeah with the darker sound I tried to incorporate a few different elements into this song. I even tried guitar, but I ran out of memory lol. That's a real compliment saying I am one of your favourite artist. I'll leave it at that as I'm a humble person.

By the way Spacekid, the sampling feature on M2K is very limited and using Audicity to implement your samples is fine by my book so I think your entry is completely valid.  ;)

Honestly I think incorporating voice samples is okay because yep MUSIC is rather limited, but I wouldn't allow other samples such as special effects, etc.

Thanks for the comment Fear 2 Stop, (or Billy if that's alright to say!). I think me and Rob did have something in common when we went for the darker side of Xmas, with ours picture what you will, like me in a Elf suit giving everyone a lump of coal in their throat! Haha Rob's is quite stunning as is all the entries, this could be quite a close competition, if mine doesn't get it then at least I know I will have been beaten by a worthy track and that is more than enough for me

Having a little trouble with recording the vocals to my track.
Because of the way my desk is set up [link (//http://)], I can't get my camera to make sure that 1) both me and the microhpone are in the camera shot whilst recording, and 2) my camera can pick up my voice fine. Well, 2)'s not a huge issue because I can use that for "backing vocals", but 1) is the main issue.
Bear in mind that the microphone cable's at full stretch where it is currently.. though I am working on that with the no budget I have (I've tried moving the camera from the pile-of-books-on-top-of-my-TV to balancing-on-a-juice-bottle-on-top-of-the-CD-stand-of-my-computer-desk - but I've been more "make-shift-camera-stand" than that in the past, I'll tell you that now. :D)

I think we need to clear something up... ;)

Some of the MUSIC/MTV products have a sampler, so it would be a bit weird to disallow external
samples, so long as they're sequenced within a MUSIC product that should be fine.

There are limits of course... If you create an ENTIRE song in PRO Tools, sample the whole thing into
MUSIC and then record it out of the PlayStation or your PC, then clearly that's taking the p*ss! :P

It would be good if people stated if they've used external samples just for everyone else's benefit.
It's good to know what we're managing to put together with/without outside samples.

Recording vocals into MUSIC to go along with your song sounds like a great idea.  ;D

Here is my contribution to the competition... (not in the comp, just a theme for it!)

http://www.icecubes.org.uk/mp3/Bellitzen.mp3

It's just a bit of fun written in MTVMG2 over the past few days when I've had time to grab the
controller and sit down undisturbed. It could do with some more TLC, but by then the competition
would be over, LOL!

Oh, and for the record this doesn't use any external sounds... but I'm sure any long in the tooth
users can tell that quite easily(!)

I've really enjoyed writing this song. There are some shortcomings with MTVMG2... things that we
just didn't get time to add in, but I am chuffed with what did actually make it into the product.

After a few hours I started to use it without thinking which button does which function too,
which was great. I also remembered some shortcuts like pressing SELECT on the track headers mutes
the track, and pressing the shoulder buttons in a menu attaches it to that shoulder button as a
shortcut.

Anyhow, enough waffling.  :P

Hope (some of) you enjoy the track... it's a bit twee and M.O.R. but I wanted to create something
very typically Christmas.  8)

ATB,
Tim.

Wow Tim, already this is sounding very seasonal, but with an electronic twist.

Wonderful use of the sleigh bells and organ, this track actually reminds me of some of Orbitals work in places...the bells that come in three quarters of the way through are awsome!

Brilliant work, this fits the festive period perfectly.

How cute Tim :)
This song could be a perfect soundtrack for a J-RPG game. while listening to this i can imagine children playing in the streets of a snowy little village placed on the top of a mountain (in every RPG you can find such a scenery ;)).
So sweetie, so cute.. are you too a fan of Nobuo Uematsu?

I have a question. How about creating the WHOLE thing IN MTVMG/MG2000 and beefing it up OUTSIDE of the Generator? That's what I normally do anyway is compose and create the whole thing in the program and beef it up once the song is done.

I'm in a similar boat: I actually record my vocals outside of Music 2000 since I run the program off an emulator (though I still use the official disc - it's just that my TV's only got one speaker whereas my computer has two)

I doubt it dude, the base track has been made in a MUSIC related game, therefore it is within the realms of the competition, no one likes a shit sounding track so I doubt too much fuss would be made over it

I would hope not, as I make my stuff sound spiffy with Adobe Audition. Otherwise, ALL of my instruments & sound effects are made with MG2 (and occasionally DHF). I just tweak the hell out of them in the sample editor.

Post by: Season 8 on December 09, 2009, 10:55:44 AM
I honestly don't see a problem in like tweaking sound like getting rid of crackling or making it sound "better", I mean everyone uses certain types of production in pretty much every song they make so to DQ anyone for that would be pointless as then everyones tunes would sound substandard or less cleaner and no one would bother making it. In my opinion if it's made in MUSIC and cleaned up with another program that's fair to me. But hey, I'm not the contest runner or anything, that's just once again, my opinion

If you take the final song out of MUSIC and then clean it up in say SoundForge or Audition then that's
fine. Sometimes you need to maximise/compress things a little. So this isn't a problem for the competition.
So long as all the sequencing is done in a MUSIC product, that's fine.

I've even known people to write 3 songs in MUSIC 2000 (due to sample memory restrictions in a PS1)
and then string them all together in a Sound Editor to make one long song. Again, this is fine... and
very ingenious!

At this stage, there would be nothing to gain from saying you HAVE to use internal samples only, or
that you have to sample and edit the sounds within the package. If you did, that's great, and feel
free to brag about it(!) If you sampled something into Audacity, tweaked it, and then imported it into
MTVMG2 then that's fine.

The main rule here is that an MUSIC/MTV product was used to sequence the song you submit.

Hope that clears it all up? If not, feel free to ask!

8 days to go! I will post a photo of the prizes here very soon - just going to dig one out later today. ;)

I love the Final Fantasy scores... :)

I do have a soft spot for twee game music, or music that's originated from the Nintendo style.

Having said that, I'm not exclusively inspired by that one genre, I also love the more raw and
punchy Commodore 64 style too when it comes to old skool influences.

Hi,

I was just rummaging through some old sound files, and I came across a song I created for my Junior Schools 100 year anniversary back in 2001 which I thought I'd share with you guys.

The School Governors asked me to compose something that the kids could sing along to, and I was honoured to do it of course. What I've only just remembered is that I used MTVMG2 to write the track!

As it's a Welsh speaking school, there is also a Welsh version, and of course an intrumental version too. You'll notice good use of the that classic organ sound again in this track... in fact I think it sounds a bit Christmassy, hence posting it here and not elsewhere in the forum. ;)

http://www.icecubes.org.uk/mp3/Henllan-100-Years-English.mp3
http://www.icecubes.org.uk/mp3/Henllan-100-Years-Welsh.mp3
http://www.icecubes.org.uk/mp3/Henllan-100-Years.mp3

We pressed a CD for each of the kids involved... it was a real buzz to go back to my primary school and meet the original teachers, who, remarkably were still very much live and not it too bad shape considering(!)

Anyhow, thought I'd share the fact that I have actually used the MUSIC products for something pretty important, and not just demos or riff building. For the tech-minded, there wasn't enough RAM to hold the vocals, so the music and vocals were mixed together using Cubase (if memory serves me correctly). The track was pretty much 'as-is' out of the PS2, maybe a hint of E.Q. and then final compression once the vocals were in. So MTVMG2 really did itself proud on that day. :D

Now, I REALLY DO need to take piccies of the prizes for this competition and post them here!!! Sorry for the tardiness. ;)

Cheers'n'beers,
Tim.

P.S. In reply to The Lyricist, not so bad... looking forward to Christmas! ;O)

I'll make sure to go through the entries and check 'em all out, as well as showing Tim with a ungodly ammount of praise for being one of the factors that kept me in the music making game right after i'm done posting this.

I was struggling with an idea of what to do for the contest. I didn't want to do something sing-songy-christmas cheese that i'm sure that a lot of other entrants are going to be doing, and i didn't want to redo a christmas carol in (one of) my style(s). About an hour earlier, possibly less, i came up with a little idea as something to do for christmas; Write a peice of music, stick it on a number of CD's, sell them at school, and donate every last penny of it all to a charity of some kind. So, i get to work on a peice i'm calling "Million", and i notice about halfway through "hang on a minute, this sounds kinda winter-ish."; so i figured i'd submit it to the contest, too!

HOWEVER, I must stress, this is ONLY a demo so far. I plan for it to be a bit longer. But, hey, i figured i'd allow you to have a sneak peek at what i've got so far!

And holy sweet lord do i want the WipEout pure soundtrack. Like, you have no idea.

Hi Guys,

I'm downloading the latest entries to post to BandCamp...

Someone asked if the prizes were for 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc? The plan is that all of the items in the photo
are for 1st Prize!

But...

I've got another spare MUSIC 3000 sampler (somewhere!), so I'll give that as a second prize, along
with anything else I can scoop up at the time - just so it's not just one person who wins a prize.

It's a shame that I don't have access to any MTVMG2 samplers. However, I will let you into a little
secret (which is of no real consequence now anyhow!). At the time we created the MTVMG2 samplers
there was another sampler that worked 100% with MTVMG2, and we sometimes used one as a spare
if we didn't have a 'genuine' one laying around. I am now going to (a) rack my brains to see if I can
recall the name of that sampler and (b) dig around in the cupboards to see if I have an old one laying
around... and if so, I can throw that into the mix too (please excuse the pun).

All the best!  ;D
Tim.

+++STOP THE PRESS+++
Apparently, Jester beat me to the punch in 2007, as they posted the USB Sampler 'secret' on their Forum.
Ah well, shows how close my finger is to the pulse(!) Hahaha!

Sadly yes, the software is SCEE (so Europe only) but the sampler will work anywhere as it's a non-regional device.

almost forgot to notify some relevant information about JCW's entry. as you can hear the song features some external samples including:

- 2 oldskool chords
- a hoover sample

this just in case you wonder why you can't find similar sounds in the MG games. :)

Okay wasn't sure to upload this in the Christmas Competition thread, so I created a new topic. Here is my Christmas themed song "Christmas Canon"..... It's a variation of the popular classical masterpiece. I incorporated elements of breakbeat, freestyle, trance, classical, and bass music into this. Lots going on. Multiple strings, bells, chants as I aimed to give it an uplifting sound. Definite attention to detail and smooth panning was important to me. Sleigh bells and Winter winds too! I'm pleased with it and I hope you all will be too. Please comment. Thanks.  :)

I really need to listen to some stuff here again someday, I wish I had some more time

Anyway, I decided to submit something for the contest. It is two months old but due to the style it seems to fit Christmas time pretty well. I am sure some of you heard it before, since it has been on Youtube, Omnimaga and Myspace for a while, but I don't remember if I submitted it here before. It is similar to Dreamland, Enter The Dream World and X-Mas Core in terms of samples used. Like these songs, it was done using Music 2000 for the Playstation 1 and its samples. Genre is Happy Hardcore ('90s style). Download is avaliable below (320K MP3):

Unsure whether I'll get the vocals for the second half done by the end date, so... as much as it pains me to hand in unfinished material, it'll have to do in case I don't get the final final version finished in time.

Here's mine so far. A complete note-for-note cover/remix of "Parabola" by Tool. Including the 3-minute intro "Parabol", with vocals, making the whole thing 9:18.
Made a minor change at one point (one riff should go in 15/8 but I added an extra half-beat because I wouldn't've been able to finish it otherwise.. that said, one bar of that same section had to have its tempo doubled because it was originally in 2/4. :D)

It's hardly Christmassy by any means (hell, I might end up switching this one for a remix of "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against The Machine... I hope some of you understand why I'd be doing that song for Christmas. :D)

If I do somehow get it completely finished by the 15th, I'll replace the unfinished with this one, mirror it on YouTube, and make a thread on it here. ;)

The guitar-replacement was a result of layering "choral" and "alternate" and panning them 50% opposite each other.
The bass was a result of layering "bowow" and "Fizzy Pop", the same samples from Phoenix (TIMGUL Hypermix Edit).
The drums were:
- Kick = Floor it 4
- Snare = Chunky
- Hats = Cheap Open/Close
I forget which ones the Crash and Ride Cymbals are.
- Toms = Dry & Acoustic.

The vocals were recorded by yours truly in Audacity.

I'm still behind with my song, and i've got but an afternoon to finish it. D8 Drat!
On the plus side, the fact it's freezing frickin' cold around here at the moment is a nice little peice of inspiration. Hopefully i'll have the whole thing finished by tonight.

And darnit i WILL go through this thread at some stage and listen to all of the entries. I'm half tempted to make a quick mix-disc of the stuff for a little get together with some pal's i'm having this friday, acctually.

Unfortunetly, the original charity idea had to be pushed back until after new year; i'm not gonna be able to sort everything out 'til after christmas, nor will i get the stuff i need probebly before next week. It's a pity, 'cus the charity in question is one dealing about something kinda personal (It's a charity set up to help a couple of Romanian children born with Squints. I was born with a Squint myself; which eventually led to my Lazy Eye), but, hey, that's just the way thing's work. Pity, really...

Any entries need to be on here by 12 midnight GMT tomorrow ( gotta call a halt sometime! )

I will then retreat to the nearest swedish massage parlour to be pounded while I listen to all
the entries. I'll select the winners over the weekend and post the results here and on the
BandCamp page.

Once that's done, if the winners want to contact me via e-mail with their snail mail address

I'm uploading the latest entries to the BandCamp page over the next hour or so...

Best of luck to all the remaining entrants! I took a listen to everything here, and i am THOROUGHLY Impressed. So much so i made a quick 2-CD set for whenever i may need it. XD Favorites of mine include Fear 2 Stop's entry (The intro cracks me up; but in the good way. I love the beat, too!), The Lyricist's Entry (Because i love me some trippy music), Omni's Entry (Oh, if i was a stereotypical-to-the-point-of-ludicrocy Pill=Poppin' Raver, Omni... If only...), casper audioghost's Entry (It's got a nice, simple charm to it), and Master Dutch's Entry (It reminds me a LOT of the work of an artist that goes by the name of Pogo. Or Faggottron on Youtube).

And whilst i'm at it; I'm in love with the Welsh version of that song you did for your old Primary school, Tim. I think it's the voice of the kid singing the Solo sections that sells it, for me. I'm a friggin' softy when it comes to kids. XD

Oh yes, and by the by, it was a tough job (And i had to suffer M2K crashing! Darn you memory restrictions!), but i finishedmy entry. I changed a few of the samples around, added in some falsified "chopped Piano" notes that are supposed to sound sort of samples (but are, in fact, not. Of course), because i've got a disturbing facination with "Chopped" loops. I did the same to the vocal loop towards the end, just to add a bit of flavour. I was going for something that was a mix between something Fatboy Slim or the Chemical Brothers would make, with a little flavour of Hideki Naganuma mixed in. (AKA, the man behind some of the Jet Set Radio/Jet Set Radio Future and some of the first Sonic Rush soundtrack). Keep your ears out, too; i'm working on a remix of it. Purely because i can.

As a heads up; i've only got tomorow and Friday to worry about (or possibly less, if the Snow keeps up), then i'm off for two weeks. If i get the time (and i probebly will), i'll happily do an 'Album Cover' for this contest over the weekend. I need an exscuse to stretch my drawing fingers anyway.

All that aside, i hope you enjoy this; I went through QUITE  a bit of trouble to finish it on time. XD

Nice vocal sample and dreamy effects in the beginning. Really like the beat/old school sound to it.
2:00 really enjoying this part.
2:55 like that melody.... goes well with everything.
Really liked the overall flow/beat and use of pads.... I can envision seeing a million stars when I focus on the dreamy/pads.

nakamura here with my entry. I have a new track i planned to enter but it just idnt ready and with working 6 days a week and looking after my daughter I just wont have time to complete it. Also been working on a better version of my laast tune and i polished it up a fair bit for this compo.

Here is The Last Goodbye.

Ahhh yes this song.... As I have heard this before I will post the same comment as before, and it's epic as well.  :D

"Oh man... Brilliant!  Shocked Every little subtle nuance, the panning, everything. This is the style of trance I'd like to take a shot at creating. This is like a clone of pillage himself. Maybe you're a Mini-Pillage (But who's Dr. Evil? Bliss? Sure  Cheesy .....) The transition at 3:00 - 3:10 is beyond professional. Your pads and strings blending in/out fading and re-emerging.... Wow. That was beautiful. That was uplifting. That song makes you happy. You really showed your talent on this track. You've raised the bar of excellent to a very high level now. 10/10 rating! Be extremely proud of yourself. I definitely am and I'm glad to have the chance to be able to listen to this."

I feel the same way listening to it all over again.... This song gives my balls goose bumps. I'd high 5 my penis, but sadly no arms.... Just to give you an idea what I think of this song...  :)

It's been brought to my attention that SpaceKid's entry that was initially questioned does acutally sit within the rules, i.e. the composition was done in a MUISC/MTV product, so I'll add that to the BandCamp page... which will now have a total of 14 competition entries!

I'll check this page tomorrow morning at around 8am (GMT) and any new tunes will be added. I'll then put a note on this thread saying "no more entries please" and then we'll announce our winners on Monday. :)

All the best!

Was able to barely finish a track for the competition deadline(not quite 100%, but still finished for the most part). Got it recorded and ready at the eleventh hour. Had a hard time finding free time to work on it in my busy schedule, but glad I was able to finish it to enter in the contest. And now that I got it finished and have time, I can finally listen to the other entries, which I look forward to commenting on. I'll post the song in its own individual topic later.

Heres my Entry - 'Season of Solace'

It's really great to see that there's still life in the MUSIC/MTV products, and that people are still willing
to put their creative energy into writing fresh and inspiring music. So, no matter what the results of
this competition, you are all winners...

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!  ;D

Heres my Entry - 'Season of Solace'

Listening...

Intro is so good...
:15 percussion.... Oh wow that melody.... So catchy, so awesome. Maybe one of the best I've ever heard on TIMGUL.

Wow.... Not even sure what part of song to comment on it's so pro sounding.
:57 strings... some synth bass. This is just outstanding.
This beat is ..... FLAWLESS. Best work I think I've ever heard from you.
1:56 new strings.... Wow....
2:50 breakdown.... Strings and fantastic beat.
4:45 what an ending! Wow.... The slowdown and lowered octave.

I love the panning and reverb use.
An amazing hip-hop vibe Christmas song. It is going to be very tough to beat you in the competition.

Tim,

I noticed DJ Rynzup's song isn't posted on the competition site yet. I'm sure it will be soon.... It would be a tragedy to not have his song included.

Edit:  :D There it is! Excellent!  :)

Hey I know I got no chance in hell of winning, but darn it all, I thought "fuck it why not?". At the end of the day it's a great competition and in my opinion, it helps everyones development and there is nothing wrong with that!

Thanks DJ Droppin, really glad you liked it. I've had a chance to listen to all the entries and there are a lot of great tunes in the competition album. The Bandcamp page for the album was put together great. And for those who don't know how to get to the bandcamp page to download the Holiday Competition Album, heres another link: http://timgulxmas2009.bandcamp.com/

Now, on to commenting on the rest of the tracks on the album...

First off, Great theme for the competition that was created by CoLD SToRAGE.  Great holiday tune with great melodies and a has a nice Christmas feel to it that sets up wonderfully for the rest of the album.

Fear2Stop - Slay Ride: Cool track, nice trippy sounds and cool beats. Some truely wicked sounds and effects in this one.

Love Bandit - Christmas Chemistry: Pads are great and has a nice dance beat. Great dance track with cool productions.

JCW - grinch: Great beat like always with JCW's work along with infectious melodies that will make you bob your head. Glad he was able to enter.

DJ Omnimaga- Magic Hardcore: Wonderful melodies and effects. Really like the cheerful sound of this track, and its nice to hear some new work from DJ Omni again, hopefully its not the last.

Master Dutch - smoothy: Very relaxing track. Like the beat and the sampling is well done.

Not a Number - Parabola: Original intro, and then the cool beat and pads kick in and  takes you on a very enjoyable ride. Great melodies and drum arrangments.

J-MACHine - Great vocals awesome beats, lovely pads and melodies as well. Really like the extended version that you have on the album, noticed the one I downloaded here wasn't quite as long.

Nakamura - The Last Goodbye: Great trance song. Wonderful pads throughout it, and I just really enjoyed the carefree sound of this track.

Good luck to all!

Title: TIMGUL Christmas Competition 2009 RESULTS!
Post by: CoLD SToRAGE on December 21, 2009, 10:19:00 AM
Guys... I thought running a competition like this would be pretty easy.

Set a goal, declare the rules, display the prizes, call a halt, pick a winner, job done.

Not on your life!

I spent a couple of hours yesterday listening to the entries as I'd only given them a quick listen through as each one arrived before yesterday.

Choosing a winner became more and more difficult... so I set up a spreadsheet with marks for Melody (or where appropriate song construction), Production (including ingenuity in use of the software), Seasonality (gotta have some points for that as it's a Christmas competition!) and originality (both in terms of overall song construction and style).

I've had another listen through this morning to confirm my thoughts from yesterday, and with fresh ears I've done some minor tweaking. If I tell you that out of a maximum of 40 points the top 5 are separated by only 4 points you'll get an idea of how damn close it was(!)

FIRST PRIZE:
It gives me great pleasure to award the top prize to DJ Omnimaga for his track Magic Hardcore.  ;D ;D ;D
This track represents all I'd want in a winner... it showcases what can be done with the MUSIC products, has a wonderfully catchy melody, some great breaks, tight production and level headed use of effects, clever use of the software and an original and developing song structure that keeps you interested. A great anthem!

SECOND PRIZE:
Given what I've said earlier about how tight the competition was, I wish I had enough prizes to award some joint seconds! But at the last minute 2nd place was pipped by Master Dutch and Smoothy.
I'll be honest about it, when I first heard this track I wasn't at all swayed either way. Then each time I listened to it I felt this smile spread across my face. Even up until last night I saw it creeping up the spreadsheet as I kept changing my mind about it, until finally this morning I tweaked the points here and there and clicked on "sort on TOTAL" and there it was in 2nd place!

HONORABLE MENTIONS IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:
- DJ Droppin' "Christmas Canon Medley"... I LOVE the start to this. It sums up the expectation and excitement of Christmas from when I was a child. Sent chills down my spine!

- Sacred Virgo "Angel Whisper (xmas 2009 edit)... the level of emotion in this track is extremely high. Those intro chords looping over and over soaked in reverb... just lovely, and then the strings come in. Something Vangelis could have written. Top notch. :)

- Fear2Stop "Slayride"... what can I say? SANTA ON ACID! HAhahahaha... great stuff. ;)

- Nakamura "The Last Goodbye"... tight production, nice closing chords.

- DJ Ryznup "Season of Solace"... nice use of bright top end percussion, and tidy production with use of varying BPM too.

- Casper Audioghost "Electro Carol"... liked the choice of sound here, they all sit really well together - especially liked the bassline.

- Blonde Justice "John's Gone"... Very dramatic and evocative! Liked to vocal stabs.

- J-MACHine "Million"... One of the few to use vocals, but done very tastefully! Nice bassline slides, mellow with a capital "M".

- The Lyricist "Replace the Seal"... put me very much in mind of some Depeche Mode 'B' sides. Lots of S-T-E-R-E-O panning... smoov!

- Not a Number "Parabol(a)"... Probably some of the most complex drum programming in the competition... and liked the piano melody!

-Spacekid "Broken Robots Merry Fuxxing Christmas"... great intro! :D Crazy theme too... nice stereo feel. Love 2'56'' onwards. ;)

- JCW "Grinch"... old skool vibe here. Good choice of hats, and the stabs at 2'33" kick ass!

- The Love Bandit "Christmas Chemistry"... 2'00" love the break here... nice chords, driving and final splash down at 8:19 is one of the best endings. :)

OK, so there you have it!

The judging was gruelling and clearly it would be nice if everyone could win... but suffice to say, I couldn't be a judge on XFactor - it's stressful enough when you don't really know the contestants and you don't have to stand face to face and give a judgement.

As it's Christmas, if ALL the people involved could PM me with a snail mail address I'd like to send you a limited edition ( I'll only be making 15! ) CD, containing some of my music from the past few years as a thank you for taking part. So basically, no-one goes home empty handed... even if you don't like the music you'll have a momento, LOL!

Thanks again guys, and I hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas ( or Holidays ) and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.  ;D

All the best,
Tim Wright
aka. CoLD SToRAGE.

congrats to the winners (they really deserve the prize) and to all who entered, and of course thank you tim for taking the time to listen to our songs, for being the judge of this competition (delicate role indeed, i can easily understand how tough it was to pick only 2 songs) and for your genuine interest in our community. i look forward to holding many other contests in the future and having you as a judge (or a competitor maybe, i look forward to it aswell ;)) would be once again an immense honour for all of us.

now that the winners have been proclaimed i'd like to post some of my thoughts about each entry:

cold storage: lovely anthem, it sets perfectly the mood of the contest. so cute, so sweet, adorable.

dj droppin: splendid song, dark and ominous, yet chrismassy nevertheless. as everyone pointed out, simply majestic intro. exceptional pad and strings. hard to find weak points in this song, if i had to i'd say i don't like the kick sample on the FHT section, too punchy for my tastes. apart from that, we are talking about a masterpiece here. one of my fav entries for sure.

fear2stop: incredible variety, there's so much going on. nice structure. my fav part is between 1.58 and 2.20. good perc work, lots of funny oddities according to F2S trademark sound.

casper: this song gets better and better when all the riff come together during the song. i like in particular the blip bloops of the second half and the pads, nice bassline too. the opening and the ending are a bit rough but that's not a major flaw. good song.

the lyricist: i can definitely notice an improvement comparing this song to 'the seal is broken'. those weird effects heve witten 'audacity' all over them, pretty nice. nice beats too. watch out for that popping effect afflicting the bassline. i like the experimental attitude.

the love bandit: it is clear that this song has been made by a skilled and expert producer. not very chrismassy by any means but good.

JCW: very minimal sounding, the attention is focused on the pounding beat. nice retro sound, those oldskool chords samples bring back memories.

sacred virgo: i won't comment on this guy's song since his music sucks way too much.

blonde justice: not exactly the funniest entry but hey, who cares since it's a great song, so emotional and heartfelt. it could be a perfect a perfect theme for a tragic scene in a J-RPG game. lo-fi sounding (i love that), this could be easily included in a FF OST, which is the ultimate compliment in my eyes.

dj omnimaga: so cheerful, funny and chrismassy, i love this song, it keeps growing on me. i'm not exactly a big fan of hardcore music, but this reminds me of eurodance too and that little melody is so catchy i can't help loving it. when i listen to this song i feel like it's 1994 again.

master dutch: words cannot express how impressed i am by this song. i mean, the bells, the strings, the beat, the choirs, the chimes, everything, is stunning. vocal samples are extraordinary. the ending is just crazy, i love it. superior sampling skills, i wonder where did you find all those samples. this might be my fav entry. merry trippy xmas everyone who appreciates this song as much as i do.

NaN: this is probably the most complex song among all the entries. crazy (in a good sense) attempt at remixing such a complex song, only you could try that. well, the rendition of the drums is pretty good, in particular the toms are remarkable. the choral sample replacing the guitar workss nicely, if i were you i would have added synstring c1 and a gritty synth bass like nasty 1, 2 or 3. too bad you ran out of time. this can be a very good song when it's complete.

J-MACHine: very ethereal and dreamy. nice soft sounding kick, hihats and triangle (it is a triangle, isn't it?). fitting vocal sample. good song.

nakamura: as you know this is my fav song from you so this xmas edit obviously makes no exception. simply perfect production, bittersweet melody, those strings are made in heaven. too bad you couldn't complete your 'true' entry, but this is a worthy substitute indeed.

spacekid: broken robots strike back and they're so cool as usual. it would have been a shame not to have this song as an entry for the contest. great external samples, so many different sounds perfectly merged together. this song cries out for a real electric guitar to replace the 'flatt' sample. with an electric guitar this would be excellent.

dj ryznup: while listening to this song i could never imagine you had to rush to post it right on time. great string work at around 2.50. very good beat. i'd love to hear some vocals in here, how about adding them? i mean customised vocals, not premade ones. good song.

I can't say i'm to suprised i didn't take home the gold or the silver, but it was definetly a lot of fun, entering this contest. (In spite of all of the technical issues that damn song bought me. XD) Well done to the winners, and all of the participants, and because i'm in a bit of a rush to get back to posting the backlogged music i've got, i thank every one of you that took the time to not only listen to, but give me feedback on Million. It really does mean a lot, and i'm glad you enjoyed it!

'Grats to Omni and Dutch for winning this. :)

I'm kinda glad I didn't win, to be fair.. mine was a cover/remix, which I guess meant I was marked down on originality. :P
But, good game, guys.

Also SV: It wasn't just "choral" that I used: I found that when used alongside "alternative", it sounds brilliant... case in point. :P Also, I thought I used a gritty enough synth ("bowow" and "Fuzzy Pop" simultaneously) and I might add some strings to it as well.. it'll make that ending that little extra special. (since I've done something similar in a WIP track I'm doing in Logic)

Congrats to everyone who took part. I'm so amazed with the sounds people come up with using the program. It was a real treat to be part of this contest and get to listen to all the cool songs! I was so happy to have found this forum when I did and thru all the stuff thats happened we all still find a way to be like brothers here. Thanks Tim for all that you've done for the program and us. Omni is an awesome producer and definitely deserves the win for all the stuff he's done here as well.

Happy Holidays guys!!!!

Wow thanks! I am kinda surprised to win to a certain extent, because I listened to every entries except the two last ones the other day and I liked all of them. My favourite of all is Nakamura's and Bass Launch. I liked Audioghost entry a lot too and the rest was great too. It must have been extremly hard to choose. I am not sure how long I would have taken to choose myself if I made a contest. I would surely have got to do some scoring on various points like you did, else I would have ended up not being able to give scores to songs x.x

Load of competition in terms of song quality. Plus lot of creativity went in that contest. A lot of these songs are not the usual stuff we hear on radio, yet it sounds better than most stuff we hear on radio, like with most other TIMGUL music. Had I got the ability to do this and the motivation to convert all 800 songs from this site into decrypted mp3 files, and no 100 GB monthly bandwidth cap, I would have a TIMGUL radio running 24/7.

I hope people continue making music like this and it really shows how far you can push Music 2000 series.

EDIT: I also planned to release a video of the song, showing all samples used and playing each riffs individually over here.

Hi Guys,

The commemorative discs are done...  ;D

I'll be sending them out to all of the 15 entrants along with first & second prize as soon as I have all the snail
mail addresses for everyone.

If you know of anyone who entered who might not frequent the boards too often, if you can give them a
nudge to get in touch that will speed things along!

These Data DVDs contain all of my released albums and the latest Virtual Vinyl Single. Enough CoLD SToRAGE
to freeze your brain! All the music is 320kbps MP3, so good enough for most listeners.  ;)

Thanks again guys and have a good one!

All the best,

Thanks again!

Oooo how very cool, Tim. To see all of the hard work you've gone through for us all here at TIMGUL is an honor. It's great to see how involved you've become with us all as well. As many have said "If it weren't for you, none of this would be possible." SO TRUE!

A nice Christmas gift to us all!  :) Definitely anxious to receive these.

Have a safe and Merry Christmas and you know we'll be making music with your "baby" into 2010 and beyond.

Oh, and Omni: Glad you liked my song. Appreciate the respect.  :) Maybe one day I'll try to make a happy hardcore FHT style track  :D Doubt I could anything like yours.
Title: Payback
Post by: CoLD SToRAGE on December 22, 2009, 07:07:25 PM
Hey, it's been fun listening and judging... even if it was a bit stressful toward the end(!)  ;)

I get so busy moving on to the "next best thing", especially with all the work I do and the projects I get involved in.
Sometimes it's nice to take a look back down the road and see if any of the saplings that were planted have taken
root and grown into strong oaks!

I guess this competition was my way of giving something back to the people who contributed to my life being exciting
to experience... and it really has been fun so far... so long may it continue.  ;D

Take it easy, and here's to the new decade... may it bring much cheer for us all!

I'm back from visiting the in-laws for Christmas... which was nice'n'festive. :)

I will be going to the post office to ship out all these packages tomorrow.

I was hoping for all the addresses before I went to just do one trip, but as I'm
only waiting on The Lyricist, J-Machine and Spacekid to let me know their postal
address, I can always pop theirs in the post at a later date.

Hope you're having a great holidays and all the best for the New Year - don't
